Thirty-four high school students from South-Central and East Los Angeles were honored Friday after completing a six-week program that immersed them in the world of investment and entrepreneurship.
The Summer Business Institute was the post-riot brainstorm of Rick Yamamoto, director of pension investments at Southern California Edison, and CIC Asset Management, a Latino-owned investment advisory firm.
Students developed business plans for such enterprises as campus baked-goods sales, a party decoration service and a multiethnic catering operation. Students Marques Owens and Maria Larios developed a line of casual wear, business cards and logos and did market research.
Participants took classes and went on fields trips to the Pacific Stock Exchange and a number of corporations. Support for the program came from banks, investment and insurance companies, the Kellogg Foundation, the National Society of Hispanic MBAs and others.
