SAN JOSE — A man scheduled to appear at a child custody hearing shot three deputies Wednesday after he tried to avoid a courthouse metal detector, then was shot as he fled, authorities said.
Paul Salisbury, 36, of San Jose was apprehended about a block from the courthouse after being shot numerous times in the abdomen and pelvic area.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Ken Kahn said court authorities had been alerted that Salisbury was scheduled to appear because he had a history of courtroom outbursts. Kahn said as many as 12 shots were fired.
Deputies Steven Canfield and Ismael Zabien were shot in the foyer of the Santa Clara County Court Annex, authorities said. Deputy Michael Hubbard was shot as he chased the suspect.
Only Zabien, 42, remained hospitalized. He was listed in stable condition with bullet wounds to both hands, said Santa Clara Valley Medical Center spokeswoman Karen Sweetland.
Hubbard, 36, was treated and released after a bullet grazed his neck. Canfield, 31, was treated and released for a wound to the thigh.
Salisbury was listed in guarded but stable condition.
