Frank Clancy’s “Breaking Away” (June 21) reminded me of a quotation I use to introduce lectures: “No one is completely worthless; they can always serve as a bad example.” My dad was everything I knew I never wanted to be: aloof, disrespectful and unloving. But the worst examples can be blessings in disguise if we can rise above that person’s mistakes.
