COSTA MESA : 9 Take Out Papers for 3 Council Posts
Nine residents, including three incumbents, have taken out nomination papers for three City Council seats up for election in November.
Mayor Mary Hornbuckle, who was elected in 1984, and Councilwoman Sandra L. Genis, who is completing her first four-year term in office, both intend to run for reelection.
Councilman Joe Erickson, a former planning commissioner who was appointed to the council when Ed Glasgow resigned last year, has also taken out nomination papers.
Former Planning Commissioner Brian K. Theriot, who was ousted in the middle of his four-year term early last year by the current council, also has taken out nomination papers. Theriot made headlines after his ouster when he asked the district attorney’s office to investigate a possible conflict of interest by Hornbuckle on a vote she took to close off her street in the Victoria Street widening project. The district attorney’s office later found no evidence of a conflict.
Attorney Denis W. Retoske, who represented former Councilman Orville Amburgey in a lawsuit in which Amburgey was sued along with the city by a golf course concessionaire, has also taken out papers, as have Gary C. Monahan, manager of Henry n’ Harry’s Goat Hill Tavern; Donald D. Williams, a salesman; Stephen J. McGuire, a carpenter; and Kim W. Colclasure.
Candidates for the City Council positions must file their election papers with the city clerk’s office by Friday.
