ORANGE COUNTY OLYMPIC NOTEBOOK : Taking a Trim Out of Their Logo

Redsand, a San Diego-based sportswear manufacturer, has named the new shirt that features the modified, shaved-head logo of volleyball standout Steve Timmons, the company’s co-owner.

Timmons, of Newport Beach, had his trademark flattop removed Tuesday as part of a gesture of solidarity on the U.S. men’s volleyball team, which improved to 2-1 with a 15-6, 14-16, 12-15, 15-10, 15-11 victory over Spain on Thursday.

What did they call it?

Volleybald, of course.

HOW THE OTHERS FARED

--Lanee Butler, San Juan Capistrano, remained eighth overall after the sixth and seventh of 10 races in Lechner sailboarding. Butler finished 14th--her worst placing so far--and seventh and has a net score of 80.70. New Zealand’s Barbara Ann Kendall retained the overall lead (23.40) by finishing second and sixth.

Low score wins, with each competitor allowed to throw out the race in which they scored the most points.

--Janet Evans, Placentia, led from the start and became the first swimmer to win back-to-back 800-meter freestyle titles. Her time of 8 minutes 25.52 seconds was almost five seconds ahead of runner-up Hayley Lewis of Australia, but 9.30 seconds off her world record set in 1989.

--Daniel Henderson, Apple Valley and formerly of Cal State Fullerton, lost, 7-2, to David Martinetti of Switzerland in the ninth-place match of the 82-kilogram (181-pound) weight class in Greco-Roman wrestling.

--Greg Springer, Costa Mesa, failed to advance past the semifinals in the men’s double sculls. He and teammate Jonathan Smith of Swampscott, Mass., finished fifth in their heat.
