In His Defense, He Was Paid for His Offense
Bad field, no play? Manager Jim Leyland of the Pittsburgh Pirates recounted this story to his somewhat less-than-average defensive outfielder Gary Varsho. Leyland told Varsho about former Baltimore Manager Earl Weaver’s conversation with Pat Kelly, whose defensive capabilities pretty well matched Varsho’s.
“When I put you in the game I want you to stand right here and don’t move,†said Weaver, pointing to a position three feet from the foul line. “If the ball is hit to you, all I want you to do is throw it to second base.â€
Asked Kelly: “What if we’re up a run in the ninth inning and a man is trying to score from second base?â€
Said Weaver: “Don’t worry about that--if we’re up a run in the ninth inning, you aren’t out there anyway.â€
