Harvard-Westlake’s Young Gains Volleyball Honor

Harvard-Westlake High’s Court Young has been named an All-American after helping the Santa Monica Volleyball Club defeat a team from Puerto Rico, 12-15, 15-10, 15-13, in the final of the 16-and-under U.S. Volleyball Assn. Junior Olympic national championship last week.

Hurdler Raymond Banner and sprinters Mike Moguel and Patrick Abdelkerim, who helped Birmingham High win its first City Section track title in May, will attend Long Beach City College, West L. A. College, and UC Davis, respectively, in the fall.

Banner was second in the 110-meter high hurdles in the City finals and fifth in the state finals. Moguel placed fourth in the 400 in the City meet. Abdelkerim finished fourth in the 100 in the City championships.

Dorian Valdez of Simi Valley High, the third-place finisher in the boys’ 800 in the Southern Section 3-A Division track and field championships, will run cross-country and track for Moorpark College next school year.

Don MacLean of the Clippers, a former Simi Valley High basketball player, will be a guest speaker Monday at the Simi Valley High basketball camp.
