Pat Duncan of Rancho Santa Fe shot a 1-over-par 73 and shared a three-way tie for third after the opening round of the California State Amateur in Pebble Beach. Duncan is the 1990 Southern California champion.

Leader Carl Lundquist of Stockton fired the only sub-par score of the day with a 1-under 71 in the tournament, which is being played on the Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill Golf Course.

Defending champion Harry Rudolph III of La Jolla, who recently helped Arizona win the NCAA national team championship, was in a group of eight golfers, including Oceanside’s James Meyer, tied at 74.

After today’s second round the top 32 golfers, out of a field of 102, will advance into match play competition beginning Wednesday.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

San Diego PAL’s 16-under team stayed in the championship bracket and advanced to today’s 24-team tournament with an 89-73 victory over Georgia in the AAU/USA Junior Olympic National championships.

Vanessa Nygaard of Carlsbad High led all scorers with 18 points and teammates Paula McNamee of Bonita added 16, DeAngela Minter of Vista High contributed 15 and Carlsbad High’s Renee Demirdjian tacked on 10. Minter sparked a first-half rally with three consecutive three-pointers and scored 11 of her 15 points before halftime. Lorice Watson on Monte Vista scored nine points and grabbed seven rebounds.
