La Puente : Senior Citizen Housing OKd
A proposed 41-unit senior citizens housing project has won approval from the City Council, despite protests that elderly residents of La Puente will not be able to afford the rent.
In a 3-2 vote, the council granted final approval Tuesday to developer Bhagabhai Patel to build the three-story complex in the 700 block of Glendora Avenue.
Councilman Charles H. Storing, who opposed the proposal along with Councilman Manuel Garcia, complained that Patel should have been required to get federal rent subsidies. Without them, Storing said, La Puente senior citizens won’t be able to afford the expected $500-a-month rents.
But City Atty. Carol Lynch told council members that, under the city rent laws, they could not force Patel to apply for federal subsidies.
