Downey : Boggs Keeps District 1 Seat, Lawrence Wins at-Large Bid
- Share via
Incumbent Diane P. Boggs retained her City Council seat by 45 votes, according to final election results released this week.
Boggs won her third term by beating out challenger Johnette Stickel to represent District 1, which covers the southeast part of Downey. Boggs finished with 50.78% of the vote to Stickel’s 49.23%.
In the close District 5 contest, marketing consultant Joyce Lawrence defeated banker Steve Allen for the council’s at-large seat by 193 votes. Lawrence will replace incumbent Barbara Hayden, who did not run for reelection.
The outcome of the two races was delayed because thousands of write-in ballots had to be counted by hand.
