Emerson Fittipaldi benefited from Michael Andretti’s late misfortune and claimed the pole position for the Budweiser-G.I. Joe’s 200 Indy car race at Portland, Ore.
Fittipaldi had an average speed of 115.730 m.p.h. on his final lap of qualifying over the 1.95-mile Portland International Raceway road course.
Andretti had his top speed of 115.382 m.p.h. three laps from the finish. He thought he was on his way to a faster effort on his final lap, but he ran out of fuel on the back straightaway.
