AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL ROUNDUP : 7-Run Inning Lifts Sepulveda Past Glendale
Sepulveda parlayed four hits, four walks and two hit batters into a seven-run eighth inning and thwarted a ninth-inning rally to post a 9-7 victory over Glendale (5-1) in an American Legion District 20 game Saturday at Glendale High.
With Sepulveda trailing, 5-2, Brad Fullmer tripled home Jeff Shapiro and Eathan Parker. Fullmer scored on Mike Gursey’s single to knot the score, 5-5.
Chris Portugal hit a double with two out, scoring Joe Eskenazi to give Sepulveda a 6-5 lead. After Matt Muler was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Shapiro drilled a triple down the right-field line to give Sepulveda (6-2) a 9-5 advantage.
Don Kinney’s two-run homer in the ninth cut the deficit to 9-7, but Sepulveda reliever Steve Cain recorded the last out with a runner at second to earn his second save.
In other District 20 games:
Van Nuys Notre Dame 14, Las Virgenes 1--Chris Garza had three hits--including two doubles-- and two runs batted in and Dave Supple had two hits and three RBIs for Van Nuys Notre Dame (8-0) in a game shortened to 6 1/2 innings by the 10-run rule.
Ryan Stromsborg belted his third homer, a two-run shot, to highlight a seven-run third inning. Left-handed pitcher Chris Leveque (3-0) surrendered one hit and struck out four through five innings before yielding to Lou Tapia.
Verdugo Hills 7, Woodland Hills East 2--John Workman’s second homer of the season, a two-run blast in the fifth, gave Verdugo Hills (6-1) a 5-2 lead. Workman also hit a two-run triple in the third.
Valley North 4, Burbank 1--David Tibor (2-0) went the distance for Valley North, striking out three and allowing no extra-base hits at Burroughs High.
Mark Lopez went two for three with a double and three RBIs and Ben Yosfan had two hits and scored two runs for Valley North (6-1-1).
