U.S. Seizes Ships, Cargo Violating Haiti Embargo

MIAMI — The U.S. Customs Service has seized three ships and cargo valued at more than $1 million in violation of the U.S. trade embargo against Haiti, officials said Thursday.
Washington and other Western governments have pledged to continue the embargo until President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, ousted in a Sept. 30 military coup, is reinstated.
A new prime minister, former World Bank economist Marc Bazin, is scheduled to be sworn into office today despite objections from Aristide supporters and international diplomats.
