Joey Gamache of Lewiston, Me., stopped Chil-sung Chun of Korea after the eighth round Saturday at Portland, Me., to earn the World Boxing Assn. lightweight championship, his second world title.
Referee Stanley Christodolon halted the scheduled 12-round bout when trainers were unable to stop bleeding from cuts over both of Chun’s eyes.
Gamache (29-0, 18 knockouts) won the WBA junior lightweight title last summer when he stopped South African Jerry N’Gobeni, but vacated that title to move up to a higher weight class. The WBA lightweight title became vacant when champion Pernell Whitaker moved up to welterweight.
