Conroy’s Attack on Casinos a Loser

When are they going to ship Mickey Conroy (R-Santa Ana) back to Fantasyland where he belongs? This staunch Republican conservative, the friend of business, has come up with a bill prohibiting port-to-port gambling in California (“Bill Tries to Sink Floating Casinos,” June 8). And the attorney general (Dan Lungren) supports him.
Their fear is that “organized crime” will somehow sneak in and take over California. Wow! With the Indians running bingo all over the state, the state running a lottery, the tracks running off-track betting, the various cities and counties running their card parlors, the schools and churches and synagogues with their bingo, and the local bookies in the cracks doing their thing regularly, I wonder how long “organized crime” is going to have to stand in line for a piece of the action.
Let’s face it, the disorganized folks have got it all. There’s no room for the real crooks. But Mickey and Goofy don’t seem to realize that. That’s why they’re in Sacramento, I guess.
