UCLA sophomore Ryan McGuire’s two-run home run sparked Team USA’s 13-2 victory over Venezuela in an exhibition at Millington, Tenn., on Friday night.
But McGuire doesn’t feel secure about his chances of making the U.S. Olympic baseball team. He is battling for a spot on the Olympic team with Cal State Long Beach’s Jason Giambi.
“Sometimes I think my chances are good, sometimes I think they’re (not),” McGuire, a first baseman, said. “I’m definitely happy about tonight. It had to help.”
There are 33 players in camp. The roster has to be trimmed to 25 before the team begins its U.S. tour next week; the final roster for Barcelona will be 20 players.
“I’m not thinking of making the final 20 yet,” McGuire said. “I just want to make the first 25.”
UC Riverside’s Daron Kirkreit pitched three scoreless innings Friday night, giving up one hit and striking out five.
