BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : Nevin Says He’ll Sign With Astros
Phil Nevin, the Cal State Fullerton third baseman selected first in baseball’s amateur draft last week, said Friday he will sign a contract with the Houston Astros Wednesday.
Houston television station KRIV-TV reported that Nevin’s one-year contract will include a $700,000 signing bonus.
George Steinbrenner will be allowed to reassume operating control of the New York Yankees by the start of next season, according to a report in the New York Daily News.
Commissioner Fay Vincent said Thursday that he intended to announce a decision in Steinbrenner’s case on Monday. The ruling already has been given to Steinbrenner’s lawyers. The News reported that Steinbrenner’s lawyer, Arnold Burns, will meet with Vincent to get the owners’ agreement to the terms in writing.
The Seattle Mariners put center fielder Ken Griffey Jr. on the 15-day disabled list because of a sprained ligament in his right wrist. . . . Detroit Tiger pitcher John Doherty (four games) and Cleveland Indian catcher Sandy Alomar (three games) were suspended by American League President Dr. Bobby Brown for their roles in a bench-clearing brawl on June 8. They will continue playing until an appeal is heard.
