Gilding the Table: A richly gilded 18th-Century French table bought in 1981 for $637,000 was sold Thursday for $2.2 million. Christie’s auction house in London said the seller was Basia Johnson, heiress to the Johnson & Johnson fortune, who sent several pieces of elaborate French furniture to auction. The buyer, who submitted a bid before the auction, was not identified.
