World IN BRIEF : PERU : Guerrilla Leader Reportedly Captured

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Victor Polay, 40, the leader of the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement, was captured in Lima, officials said. The capture would mark a success for the crackdown by President Alberto Fujimori, who imposed near-dictatorial rule in April with the stated intention of waging war on political guerrillas and drug traffickers. Tupac Amaru is the smaller of two rebel groups in Peru; the larger is Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path).
