Air Promo Spawns a Hot Air Record

NEW YORK — The air fare wars have put wings under AT&T.;
The phone company said it handled a record 177.4 million long-distance calls Monday--many from people seeking special air fares.
“We broke the old record last Thursday with 159.6 million calls, and (Monday) we broke Thursday’s record,” said Jim Carroll, vice president for network operations. “We’ve never seen calling like this, particularly to 800 service numbers.”
Before the airline promotions began last Wednesday, the one-day record was 157.8 million calls Dec. 2, the Monday after Thanksgiving. On an average day, AT&T; handles 135 million calls.
