Wild Pitch in 11th Sinks Fillmore
San Marino High pushed across three runs in the top of the 11th inning Friday to defeat Fillmore, 11-8, in a quarterfinal game of the Southern Section 2-A Division baseball playoffs at Fillmore.
With the bases loaded and none out in the 11th, San Marino scored on a wild pitch and took a 9-8 lead. Matt Barbarics, a junior, then lined a two-run double to cap the scoring.
Barbarics (4-0) pitched 9 2/3 innings in relief and did not allow an earned run for San Marino (20-4), which had 16 hits. Ryan Johnson, the winning pitcher in San Marino’s first-round game, pitched the bottom of the 11th to earn the save.
Johnson also homered, his fourth, for San Marino, champion of the Rio Hondo League.
Louie Garza, the starting pitcher for Fillmore, re-entered to pitch in the seventh and took the loss. Garza fell to 5-3.
Fillmore scored four runs in the first inning and led, 6-3, after two innings.
The Flashes (15-5-1) committed four errors.
