Ken Davis, Schurr high school football coach, has resigned, citing frustration with the Montebello Unified School District’s recent $9-million budget cuts on athletics. The Montebello school must raise $100,000 to retain sports. Bus transportation and the summer football conditioning program were eliminated.
“I’m not tired of coaching,” said Davis, 57, who will remain as athletic director. “I just decided I didn’t want to put up with these things anymore.”
Davis (143-84-2), the only football coach since the school’s inception in 1971, has led the Spartans to eight league championships and 14 playoff appearances. Schurr, the 1980 Southern Section Southeastern Conference champion, advanced to the Division III semifinals last fall.
