In other 3-A quarterfinal games:
Bonita Vista 6, Grossmont 3--Jorge Millan (8-1) ousted Grossmont, which won the 2-A title the past two years, by scattering six hits and retiring the last 10 batters he faced. Millan, a right-hander, also struck out six and walked only one. Ron Battle went two for three with two runs to lead Bonita Vista (19-8-2). No. 1 Grossmont finished 23-3-1 and lost its first home game since April 10, 1990.
Montgomery 3, Helix 1--Eduardo Duarte (4-0) scattered five hits, struck out six and walked one to lead No. 2 Montgomery (25-3) into Saturday’s semifinals against No. 3 Mira Mesa. Montgomery scored its runs in the first on an error and bases loaded walks to Steve Quinteros and Jesus Gonzalez. Bob Miller went two for three, including a home run, for Helix (18-12).
Mira Mesa 3, Granite Hills 0--Mira Mesa (24-5) rotated pitchers Jason Payne and Brendan Hause throughout and limited Granite Hills (16-13) to four hits. Payne started and was briefly relieved by Hause in the third. Hause struck out Eric Nelson with two outs and runners on first and third. Payne then pitched the fourth and fifth before Hause re-entered and retired six of the final seven batters. Coleman Mullin had a two-run single.
