PALMDALE : Use of Airport Property for Drag Strip Urged

Ten years after the Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners rejected his idea of building a drag strip at Los Angeles International Airport, Willie A. (Big Willie) Robinson is eyeing vacant airport property near Palmdale as an alternative site.
Robinson, president and founder of the National and International Brotherhood of Street Racers, met this week with the commissioners to discuss his idea. The goal is to steer the interests of youngsters away from machine guns and crack pipes and toward grease guns and chrome tailpipes by giving them a safe, legal place to race their cars or motorcycles.
Because the board’s agenda was long and included such contentious items as a study on the possibilities of selling LAX, Board President Robert Chick rescheduled Robinson’s item until June.
