A Valley Center woman was San Diego County’s lone Memorial Day weekend traffic fatality, the California Highway Patrol said Tuesday.
Kathleen Roemer, 32, was driving north on Valley Center Road at 3:40 a.m. Saturday when her truck crossed the center line and veered off the road, CHP Officer Jerry Bohrer said.
Her vehicle then sheared off a fire hydrant, went through a fence and hit several trees before rolling several times, he said.
Roemer, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected and crushed when the truck rolled over on her before coming to rest on its wheels, Bohrer said. He said authorities do not know what caused the truck to drift off the road; there was no evidence at the scene that Roemer had been intoxicated, Bohrer said.
Roemer died at the scene.
Also over the holiday weekend, 10 people were arrested for drunk driving at a CHP sobriety checkpoint in San Diego, and two were arrested at a similar checkpoint in Escondido, officers said.
