A Van Nuys man died after he slipped while fishing and fell 80 feet down a waterfall in Sequoia National Park near Porterville, authorities said Monday.
Ronald Kempton, 30, was fishing with a friend near the Peppermint Falls area of the park about 7:45 p.m. Friday when he stepped to the edge of the waterfall and lost his footing on slippery rocks, Tulare County Sheriff’s Deputy Minnie Castaneda said.
Kempton plunged into a shallow pool at the base of the falls, hitting his head on the rocks, Castaneda said. A physician who happened to see Kempton fall helped pull him from the water and administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation for 50 minutes, but was unable to revive him.
