Air France Pilots Call Protest Strike

PARIS — Air France’s main pilots’ union has called a strike for Wednesday and Thursday to protest the dismissal of a pilot who opposed the investigators of a 1988 Airbus jetliner crash.
The Syndicat Nationale des Pilotes de Ligne, which represents about two-thirds of the French flagship airline’s pilots, first made its strike threat a week ago.
Since then, Air France had not called for negotiations over the controversy involving pilot Norbert Jacquet.
The union said Jacquet wrongfully lost his job after he protested against the panel that investigated the June, 1988, crash of an Airbus Industrie A320 near Mulhouse in eastern France.
The union is demanding that Jacquet be reinstated.
Air France has said that the airline fired Jacquet in April, 1989, because he refused to have a medical examination after a lengthy absence for illness.
An Air France spokesman said the airline would carry out virtually all its scheduled domestic and international flights.
