Ex-Corona del Mar Players Win in Tennis

NEWPORT BEACH — Former Corona del Mar High School players Scott Brownsberger and Jeff Ewing teamed to defeat top-seeded Robert Van’t Hof and Tim Pawsat, 6-4, 6-2, Sunday in a second-round match of the Adoption Guild Charity doubles tennis tournament at the Newport Beach Tennis Club.
In other second-round men’s doubles matches: UC Irvine’s Chris Tontz and Aaron Stolpman beat Jim Harper and Curt Stalder, 6-7, 6-4, 6-3; Phil Dent and Ross Case beat Bill Howie and Neel Grover, 5-7, 6-1, 6-4, and Carlos Bustos and Jerry Frantz beat Dax Peterson and Alvin Gaden, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
In mixed doubles: Barbara Gerken and Bob Hochstadter beat Kelly Goldsborough and Carsten Hoffman, 6-4, 6-2; Bustos and Ann Mall beat Linda Mallory and Dick Miller, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1; Stella Sampras and Geoff Martinez beat Page Bartelt and Howie, 6-4, 6-2; and Brandi Freudenberg and Pawsat beat Debbie Goldberger and John Washer, 7-6, 6-4.
The tournament continues today at several sites.
