The boundaries for 14 Simi Valley schools will be altered in the fall, school board members decided Tuesday.

An estimated 225 students in the 18,000-student Simi Valley Unified School District will be affected by the decision.

However, in several cases, students are already attending the recommended school for their area on intradistrict transfers.

Of the 10 proposed changes recommended by a task force of school officials and PTA members, two would be optional, giving parents the choice of sending their children to one of two nearby schools.

The changes were made to increase the safety of students walking and riding bicycles to school.

Boundary changes were approved for Royal and Simi Valley high schools; Hillside, Sequoia, Sinaloa and Valley View junior high schools, and Atherwood, Berylwood, Crestview, Garden Grove, Mountain View, Simi, Sycamore and Township elementary schools.

Assistant Supt. Susan Parks said many families have indicated that they will keep their children in their present schools until older siblings graduate.

Parks said she expected most children in the affected areas will be attending their new designated schools within three years.
