A 29-year-old man was killed early Sunday morning when he was speeding on a rural road in Rancho Santa Fe and lost control of his car, crashing into a tree, authorities said.
Steven Joseph Lopez of Del Mar was traveling west on Paseo Delicias when he lost control of his 1992 BMW sedan, broadsiding a large tree, the California Highway Patrol said.
Lopez, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown about 30 feet from the vehicle and was found dead at the scene, authorities said.
The impact of the accident, which occurred east of El Montevideo, tore the new car in half. The driver’s side air bag in the car appeared to have released, the county medical examiner’s office said.
