Beach Volleyball Tour Makes San Diego Stop
For the first time since the Jose Cuervo Beach Volleyball Series began eight years ago, the tour will stop in San Diego, with a handful of players winning the right to play in the sports only amateur national championship in the fall.
This weekend, the second stop of the 14-city tour is Ocean Beach, with the top two finishers in the men’s and women’s Open divisions earning a berth in the $25,000 national championship in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, Fla., Sept. 19-20. Regional winners from the series, plus four at-large teams, qualify for the tour’s finale.
Two-man teams will compete in men’s Open and B and women’s B divisions beginning Saturday, and women’s Open, and Men’s A and coed play beginning Sunday, at 9 a.m. each day. The first through fourth-place finishers in each division will receive prizes and merchandise, and a tournament T-shirt.
Players must be 21 or older. Day-of-registration begins at 7:30 a.m., and continues as long as space is available. Cost per team is $40 for the Open divisions, $35 for all other groups.
Last year, 80 teams competed in the Cuervo event in Capistrano Beach. The other California stop is in Lake Tahoe, June 6-7.
