Santa Monica-Malibu : District Raises Facility Fees
School facility fees, which are assessed on new construction in the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District, will be increased beginning July 10.
The district’s Board of Education approved the increase on Monday. Fees will rise from $1.56 to $1.65 per square foot for residential construction and from 26 cents to 27 cents per square foot for commercial developments.
The new fees are the maximum allowed by California law, said Arthur Cohen, the district’s assistant superintendent of fiscal and business services.
New development is expected to bring nearly 400 children into the school system over the next five years, according to a consultant’s report about the increase.
