Hearn Named Recipient of Gowdy Award
Laker announcer Chick Hearn has been named by the Basketball Hall of Fame as the third recipient of the Curt Gowdy media award.
Hearn will receive his award May 9 at an awards dinner that is part of the Hall of Fame’s enshrinement ceremony in Springfield, Mass.
Previous winners of the award were Curt Gowdy and Marty Glickman.
Hearn, the Lakers’ announcer since the team moved to Los Angeles in 1960, broadcast his 2,523rd consecutive game Wednesday night.
“Joining such other Laker greats as Elgin Baylor, Wilt Chamberlain and Jerry West in the Hall of Fame is a great honor for Chick,†Laker owner Jerry Buss said. “I am personally thrilled, and on behalf of the organization, I congratulate him.â€
Hearn has twice been named National Sportscaster of the Year and in 1986 was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The winner of the Curt Gowdy print award was basketball writer Sam Goldaper of the New York Times.
