The City Council on Monday approved the purchase of 6.5 acres of land for a new library.

The city agreed to pay $2.5 million for the land at the intersection of Marguerite Parkway and La Paz Road. Library supporters say they will now launch a citywide fund-raising drive to help build a state-of-the-art facility.

“It’s a dream come true,†said Councilman Robert D. Breton. “It will be magnificent. It will be the crown jewel of the city.â€

The city is asking interested citizens to join the Mission Viejo Friends of the Library to help decide on a design for the building and prioritize a long wish list of amenities. Residents can sign up at a celebration of the land purchase to be held at the current library, 24851 Chrisanta Drive, on June 7 at 2 p.m.
