LOW-METAL MEDAL: Orange County’s sanitation districts have been working with industry to reduce the flow of toxics into the county sewers. The results: a 50% reduction of heavy metals in industrial waste in eight years, plus 95% industry compliance in reducing hazardous-waste levels. . . . On Earth Day Wednesday, there was a byproduct: The sanitation districts were one of 17 winners nationwide in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s annual awards for efforts in pollution prevention.
