Long Beach : Sheriff’s Patrol Contract Extended Until June, 1993

Long Beach councilmen agreed Tuesday to continue the city’s 3 1/2-year contract with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department until June, 1993.

Sheriff’s deputies began patrolling northern and northeastern Long Beach in 1990. The contract allows either the Sheriff’s Department or the city to end the agreement in July of any year, after a review in April.

The issue has been a controversial one. The City Council is considering a proposal to disband the 84-year-old Long Beach Police Department and have deputies patrol the whole city. Some say this would save the city as much as $29 million a year.

On Tuesday, the council continued the contract with little discussion.

Due to an increased number of calls for service in northern Long Beach, the Sheriff’s Department has asked the city to add two 40-hour patrols to the area. The city will not consider the request until it begins reviewing the entire budget in May, City Manager James C. Hankla said in his report to the council.
