South El Monte : Hit-and-Run Driver Sought
Authorities sought the driver of a 1979 Chevrolet Malibu Classic that struck four family members and killed three of them in South El Monte on Easter.
The 8:30 p.m. accident occurred as Salvador Gonzales, 54, his wife, Maria, 50, and their pregnant daughter, Martha, 18, crossed Garvey Avenue at Chico Avenue.
“They started crossing in the crosswalk on a green light and had gotten three-fourths of the way across when a car traveling at 45 m.p.h. ran them over and just kept going,†Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Mike Dunkle said.
The women and Martha Gonzales’ 7-month-old fetus were killed. Salvador Gonzales suffered two broken legs.
The driver--described by witnesses as a Latino in his mid-20s who was extremely intoxicated--left behind in the street a “big chunk of grill, a small part of the headlamp retainer and lots of paint,†Dunkle said. Investigators think that the car is a light metallic brown, four-door sedan.
Anyone with information was urged to contact the Temple City sheriff’s station.
