Exodus From Haiti to Florida Growing
MIAMI — The Coast Guard said Monday that it rescued 735 Haitians fleeing their homeland over the weekend, bringing the number of Haitian refugees intercepted so far this month to 3,667.
The exodus from Haiti since a bloody coup took place there on Sept. 30 has continued even though most of the 21,000 “boat people” who have fled have been deemed economic, not political, refugees, and have been returned to Haiti.
The most recent arrivals are being kept aboard cutters at the U.S. Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where they are interviewed by immigration officials.
