Zumstein Hurt in SDSU Drills

It’s getting to where San Diego State football Coach Al Luginbill might be forced to scratch the intrasquad scrimmages he prefers each Friday during spring practice.

Injuries, the graduation of two key starters and more injuries on the offensive line might necessitate such action before too long.

On Friday, sophomore tackle Louie Zumstein and junior guard Mark Koenig joined among others, Tony Nichols (shoulder) and Carlson Leomiti (weight problem), on the spring disabled list.

Zumstein, who returned to practice just this week after an ankle operation, sprained his left knee and will likely miss the remainder of spring drills, which will conclude with practices on Monday and Wednesday and another scrimmage next Friday. X-rays taken of Zumstein’s knee showed no serious damage, but further tests will be conducted next week.

Koenig suffered a neck sprain, and he, too, is out for the spring.

Also, backup quarterback Brian Kalk left the scrimmage after attempting only four passes with bruised ribs.

With Kalk out, the Aztecs’ other backup quarterback, Tim Gutierrez, completed half of his 34 attempts for 153 yards and one touchdown. One of his passes was intercepted. Regular quarterback David Lowery completed five of nine attempts for 137 yards, including a 98-yard touchdown to sophomore Darnay Scott (three catches, 106 yards).

Sophomore running back Wayne Pittman rushed only three times but gained 97 yards and scored on a 49-yard carry. All-American sophomore Marshall Faulk gained 20 yards in six carries.

Ray Peterson, a redshirt freshman, continue to impress coaches with his punt returns. He returned one kick Friday for a touchdown.

University of San Diego had no trouble with Point Loma Nazarene in a nonconference softball doubleheader featuring two local teams. The Toreras (15-3) had 19 hits and scored 5-1 and 9-1 victories against the visiting Crusaders (9-11).
