Opponents of a Santa Clarita slow-growth initiative have raised $197,503, more than 28 times as much as proponents of the measure, according to campaign finance reports released Friday.

Santa Clarita Citizens for Managed Growth raised the money from developers, business leaders and residents to defeat Measure A, which would allow the city to approve only 475 housing units annually through 2002. The group has spent most of the contributions on a direct-mail campaign and the services of a political consultant.

Citizens for a Responsible Residential Initiative on Growth, or CARRING, which supports the measure, has raised $7,000.

The race over Measure A “is going to be tough because money does talk,†said Mayor Jill Klajic, the only City Council member who supports the initiative.
