OSCAR LETTERS

I am a member of the gay community, but I don’t believe that marching around blowing whistles, blocking traffic, displaying imagery of what one does in bed or announcing to the world that “we’re queer and we’re here†will necessarily foster a positive opinion of the gay community.

I do believe that the media and Hollywood tend to foster some very negative portrayals of gay people. What the gay community really needs is for responsible role models to step forward and at least acknowledge their homosexuality.

The gentleman (Bill Lauch) who accepted the Academy Award for best original song on behalf of his partner (Howard Ashman) who died of AIDS did a very brave and heroic thing. The media need to foster more such positive images.
