Metro BRIEFS : LOS ANGELES : Fire Engine Struck by Stray Bullet
A Los Angeles Fire Department engine was struck by a bullet on its way to a shooting call Tuesday afternoon that proved to be bogus, officials said.
There were no injuries, and there was no substantial damage to the engine or to a city paramedic ambulance that was accompanying it, said city Fire Department spokesman Bob Collis. Fire engines generally accompany city paramedics on ambulance calls in case extra help is needed.
“The police told us that we probably just got caught in some cross-fire between two gangs. The bullet landed in the right front wheel only a few feet from a firefighter,†Collis said.
Both units stopped only a block from 224th Street and Western Avenue, where a shooting had been reported. “The police told us they could find nothing there,†Collis said.
