ENCINITAS : Five-Car Pileup Snarls I-5 Traffic
A five-car pileup on southbound Interstate 5 in Encinitas early Monday backed up commuter traffic for miles.
The accident was caused shortly after 8 a.m. when a car driven by James Schroeder, 23, of Brea rear-ended a car driven by Max Wegener, 43, of San Clemente, according to CHP spokesman Jerry Bohrer.
The accident blocked the two center lanes; southbound traffic backed up to La Costa Avenue more than 3 1/2 miles away.
Schroeder was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, where he was treated for cuts and a broken ankle, Bohrer said. Wegener was also taken to Scripps and treated for minor injuries.
The accident sparked the five-car pileup. Schroeder’s and Wegener’s cars were totaled, Bohrer said. The other three cars were not extensively damaged.
Bohrer said Schroeder will be cited for speeding and driving with a suspended license.
