San Diego State left-hander Rick Navarro moved into a tie for fifth place on the Aztec all-time victory list as the Aztecs routed Utah, 13-2, in a Western Athletic Conference game at Smith Field.
Navarro pitched the first six innings, allowed only one hit and struck out nine to improve to 6-0. It was his 24th career victory, tying him with Erik Plantenburg (1988-90).
SDSU (19-7, 3-1) has won eight of its past nine games and 12 in last 14. In the overall series, SDSU is 46-6 against Utah, which fell to 5-16, 0-1.
Derek Vinyard was four for six with an RBI, and Brad Gennaro two for three with four RBIs. Also for the Aztecs, John Wagner and Jason Ledford each had two hits, and Rich Juarez and Rick Page each had two RBIs.
A two-run home run in the seventh inning kept Utah from being shut out. The two teams play a doubleheader today at 5 p.m. and a single game Sunday at 2 p.m.
University of San Diego’s game at Pepperdine was postponed because of wet grounds. The second-place Toreros (8-4 in the West Coast Conference) and Waves (8-3) will play a doubleheader today at noon and one game Sunday at 1 p.m.
Games in the UC San Diego Invitational were postponed. UCSD and Wisconsin Whitewater will try to resume their earlier postponed game--UCSD is leading 2-0 in the fifth inning--at 9 a.m. today at Southwestern College. The Tritons then play Cal Lutheran at 11:30 a.m. at UCSD. The championship is scheduled for 3 p.m. at UCSD and the third-place game 3 p.m. at Southwestern College.
MEN’S TENNIS
After splitting singles matches with Drake, the University of San Diego lost all three doubles matches, falling to unranked Bulldogs, 6-3, in the first round of the Blue-Gray Classic in Montgomery, Ala.
Jose Luis Noriega, Kevin Bradley and Ignacio Martinez won singles matches for the 23rd-ranked Toreros (10-3). Drake is 16-6.
San Diego State lost to Alabama Birmingham, 5-1, in the quarterfinals of the UC Irvine Marriott Tournament. Chris Numbers won for the 25th-ranked Aztecs (11-3). He beat Brad Summers, 6-4, 6-1. Alabama Birmingham is 12-1.
Point Loma Nazarene had little trouble with Cal Lutheran, winning 6-0 in Point Loma. Enrique Guajardo defeated Tomislav Zelenovic, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 1 singles. Mattias Rendefors, Victor Vernis, John Norton, Robert Pearson and Andrew Patton also won for the Crusaders (10-2).
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Nicole Storto was the lone bright spot for San Diego State, which dropped a nonconference match to seventh-ranked Indiana, 8-1, in Bloomington. Storto defeated Jody Yin, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, at No. 3 singles. Indiana is 13-2. No. 15 SDSU plays No. 20 Kentucky at Indiana today.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
San Diego State continued to have problems with Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. opponents, losing to UCLA, 15-6, 15-9, 15-7, at Peterson Gym. John Hyden had 18 kills and Aaron Boss 13 for the Aztecs (7-17, 2-12). Dan Landry put away 15 balls for the Bruins (10-6, 8-5).
MEN’S GOLF
San Diego State finished seventh and the University of San Diego 21st in the 18th annual Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Championships hosted by UC Santa Barbara at the Sandpiper Golf Course.
Kevin Riley led four other Aztecs and tied for 15th overall with 219 strokes.
UCLA won the event with a three-round score of 866, followed by Fresno State (869), UC Irvine (872), Pacific (874), Pepperdine (878), UCSB (880) and SDSU (884). USD had 948.
