CS Northridge’s Sila Signs With Arena Football League
Alo Sila, Cal State Northridge’s All-American defensive lineman, has signed with the L.A. Wings of the Arena Football League, a club official said Thursday.
Linebackers Kenny Vaughn and Mario Hull, Sila’s teammates on last fall’s Northridge squad, are among five other former Matadors who have been invited to try out for the Wings at a camp Saturday at West Torrance High. The others are tailback Mike Kane, quarterback Chris Parker and defensive back Dan Coleman.
The Wings, who played last season as the Denver Dynamite, will open their 10-game regular season May 29 with 20 players.
Keith Gibbs has been honored as the most valuable player of the Northridge men’s basketball team for the 1991-92 season.
Gibbs, a 6-foot-6 senior forward from West Valley College in Saratoga, Calif., led Northridge in scoring (15.2 points a game), free throws made (80), blocked shots (16) and steals (31), and ranked third in rebounding (5.0).
Other winners included senior forward Shelton Boykin (coaches’ award), senior center Brian Kilian (most improved) and junior guard James Morris (defensive player of the year).
Erin Balderama, a 5-7 outside hitter from St. Joseph High in Lakewood, has signed a letter of intent to play volleyball for Northridge.
St. Joseph was 60-6 during the four years Balderama started. She earned all-league honors in three seasons (1989-91) and was an All-Southern Section selection as a senior.
