School: Estancia High
Sport: Badminton
Position: Boys’ singles, mixed doubles
Class: Senior
Nguyen avenged his only loss of the season by defeating Sang Kim of Garden Grove in the singles semifinals of the Estancia tournament Saturday. Kim had defeated Nguyen in the semifinals of the Garden Grove tournament, but Nguyen returned the favor in consecutive games this time. He then defeated teammate Linh Doan, 16-18, 15-9, 15-7, in the final to extend his record to 15-1 this season. “He’s learned to play with poise,” Estancia Coach Lillian Brabander said. “He used to explode when he made a bad shot and the rest of the game was history. Now he can maintain his poise for a whole match.” Nguyen has joined Doan Nguyen (no relation) to form a mixed doubles team that hasn’t been beaten this season. Estancia, the defending Southern Section team champion, is the favorite to win another title.
Other top performers:
Mark Christensen, who shot a team-low three-over par 76 in the Trabuco Hills golf team’s 399-403 victory over Huntington Beach. Christensen also helped his team to victories over Valencia and Dana Hills.
Aaron Garcia and Eric Alexander, who had 25 and 24 kills in Capistrano Valley’s five-game victory over Del Mar Torrey Pines, the defending San Diego Section Division 3-A champion.
Justin McIntee, who had 25 kills for Newport Harbor in a four-game victory over Manhattan Beach Mira Costa and 22 kills in a four-game victory over Laguna Beach.
Jeff Quinn, who threw a two-hit shutout in Esperanza’s 3-0 victory over Los Alamitos, becoming the first Aztec to pitch a complete game since 1987.
