In Pursuit of Hype

The Burbank City Council’s move to rename a park for Johnny Carson because of the publicity he has produced for the city is ludicrous. It demonstrates again the council’s pursuit of hype and development over preserving traditional community values.
Before sucking up to a television comedian, the city should honor those whose vision, leadership and moral courage shaped the present city. Howard Stites was a brilliant engineer and city manager who, more than any other individual, created the modern city and held it together. Dewey Kruckeberg was responsible for the entire park system, which, except for a few additions, he planned and developed.
