MOORPARK : Egg Ranch Evacuated After Chemical Spill
A minor chemical spill at an egg ranch north of Moorpark forced the evacuation of two employees Wednesday morning, fire officials said.
Thirteen members of the county Fire Department’s hazardous materials team received a call at 6:40 a.m. about a spill at a laboratory of Egg City, said Mike Proett, captain of the team.
Fire officials ordered the evacuation of the building in the 8600 block of Shekell Road. The cleanup of diluted sulfuric acid was performed by Egg City employees and overseen by the hazardous materials team.
Fire dispatcher Rhonda Roller said 5 to 10 gallons of the substance leaked from a drum container. However, Egg City Chief Executive Officer Mike Lawler said 2 1/2 gallons had leaked.
The hazardous materials team was on the scene for about two hours, Proett said.
