LOS ANGELES : $7.8 Million Sought for Police Reforms

The Los Angeles Police Commission on Tuesday asked for $7.8 million in additional funds next year to implement the recommendations of the independent Christopher Commission.

The money would pay for key changes urged by the panel that investigated the department in the wake of the Rodney G. King beating, including greatly expanded internal investigations of citizen complaints of officer misconduct. Currently, many such cases do not make it beyond the local station.

The request comes as city officials are grappling with a projected $190-million budget deficit in 1992-93 that could require 10% spending cuts at the LAPD and other agencies. But commissioners agreed to argue the case for the funding, in part because they view the implementation of the Christopher Commission proposals as crucial to restoring public confidence in the LAPD, particularly among minority communities.
