Court Upholds Term Limits
The Assembly’s attempt to punish the California Supreme Court for approving the initiative on term limitations is just one more indication that legislators have come to view themselves as above the law. Worse, if the Legislature is allowed to carry through with this budgetary vendetta, it might do more than impair the day-to-day functioning of the court--it might undercut the independence of the judiciary here and elsewhere as judges seek to avoid the wrath of those who control the purse strings. We can’t let this happen. Seeing what the politicians have done to the legislative branch of government, who could stomach the thought of them controlling the judiciary as well?
